Running a 12 V Biogents trap or BG-Counter on solar power with the Biogents Solar Controller

Introduction

The use of solar panels is recommended when the trapping system needs to be operated autonomously for extended periods of time.

Whenever AC power is available, it is recommended to use outdoor Biogents AC adapters, as power from mains is independent of sun light, and less maintenance-intensive.

Positioning is crucial

While we usually recommend to place mosquito traps in a shady location, ideally in bushes, the solar panel/s needs to be placed in a sunny spot. If the solar panel is placed right above the trap, make sure to position them at a place where sun exposure during the day is maximized.

However, try to have some bushes/shady places in which mosquitoes like to rest nearby the trap/solar panel unit (within approx. 2 meters). Especially if you use CO2 as an attractant, mosquitoes will still be successfully collected, if the location is protected from wind.

If you use two solar panels and they are arranged in a roof-like manner, then it is best to have one panel pointing East, and the other pointing West.

Warnings

Please note that operating a trap, especially a BG-Counter on solar power is not trivial. When connecting components in the wrong sequence, you may cause damage that is not covered by warranty.

Not starting with a fully charged battery means that your solar system will run out of energy very quickly in case of partial shade or cloudy days. Make sure to have an appropriate battery charging device and check prior to installation, that your batteries are fully charged.

Not using a 100 W solar panel (or two 50 W panels) requires additional maintenance, including manually recharging the battery. This highly increases costs and the chance of damaging the BG-Counter or solar controller. This damages are not covered by warranty!
